Drawn to Nature: The Beauty of Bird-Friendly Design

Discover how beauty and conservation meet in this special webinar hosted by Onondaga Audubon Society. Join illustrator and conservationist Katie Mulligan, creator of SUNY ESF’s nature-filled mitigation murals, and bird-friendly building advocate Meredith Barges, chair of Lights Out CNY and a SUNY ESF PhD student, as they share the story behind ESF’s innovative “Make ESF More Bird-Friendly” pilot project. This spring, four areas of free-standing glass on ESF’s campus were transformed with Katie’s artwork celebrating the birds and plants of the CNY wetlands—including the American Woodcock and Common Yellowthroat, species vulnerable to building collisions.

You’ll learn how thoughtful design can delight the eye while preventing deadly building collisions that kill over one billion birds in the U.S. each year. Katie will reveal the inspiration behind her vibrant, place-based artwork, while Meredith will explore how bird-friendly architecture achieves conservation goals and award-winning designs. This conversation will leave you seeing buildings not just as structures, but as opportunities to create beauty that helps save birds.
